Valentino Panciera Besarel (Italy, 1829-1902). Paper label verso: "Freres Besarel; Sculpteurs en Bois et Marbles; Fabrique et Depot, Marbles Artistque; Venise." Besarel enjoyed great fame during his lifetime, and monarchs throughout Europe commissioned his work. This oval bevelled mirror is surrounded by superbly carved cherubs grasping trophies of war; the bottom with winged lion mask above a cherub holding an open book that reads: PAX TIBI EVANG LISTA MARCE MEWS. This piece was likely made for the Paris Exhibition of 1878.
