This set of ink cakes is considered in Chinese literature one of the "Four Precious Items of the Library" which comprise: ink, ink stones, ink brushes and paper. The making of ink is a laborious and expensive process made from the primary ingredients of lampblack (from burning vegetable oils) and glue.
