Early Dutch Stoneware Beardman Jug
(Item: P2717)
Also known as bellarmines, or by the archaic term, maskarones, these salt glazed jugs were primarily made by factories along the Rhine, but later in England and Holland. Found in a number of earthy glazes, they feature an applied, moulded face at the neck of the pot-bellied pitcher. This is a nice example, noteable for the unusual, incised hearts around the body. It does exhibit a few chips and hairline cracks.
