Bidri is a metalwork technique unique to India. Originally cast brass objects are engraved and inlaid with silver copper wire. Silver has generally been replaced by an alloy of zinc.The item is then oxidized with a mixture of ammonium chloride, potassium nitrate, sodium chloride, and copper sulfate. This changes the brass into a beautiful black color while leaving the contrasting silver/zinc unaffected.
