Printed at the bottom: "By permission of the patentees, this engraving of The First Carriage, The "Ariel", is respectfully inscribed to the directors of The Ariel Transit Company, by their obedient servants Ackermann & Co. 96 Strand". The Ariel was developed by William Samuel Henson and John Stringfellow, and patented in 1842. Larger models were not successful and subsequently a full size model was not built.
