Pair of American Porcelain Mixer Valves Repurposed as Sconces
Item: I-2-0001
W 11.5″ D 5″ H 10″
Made from rare antique plumbing parts repurposed into wall sconces. Porcelain shower mixer valves make up the base while a vintage faucet becomes the arm of the sconce. The shades are custom made for these fixtures. Mixer valves allow for mixing hot and cold water in the shower to the desired temperature. Originally mixer valves were made from vitreous china as it was thought that they were more sanitary than metals. The earliest mixer valve plates were manufactured in the 1870's. These were first introduced in hospitals and later in fine hotels and later still in home showers.
Early manufacturers included: Hoffmann & Billings MFG Co. (Milwaukee, WI), Crane Company (Chicago, IL), Federal Huber Co. (Chicago, IL/Detroit, MI), Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Co. (Pittsburgh, PA) and Morency-Van Buren MFG Co. (Sturgis, MI). These mixer valve sconces are wired to accommodate a maximum 60 watt bulb. They can be purchased as singles or a matching pair.
