Perhaps of naval origin, for the writing and storage of correspondence for a high ranking official, this diminutive, English Colonial piece features an elaborately carved, pierced gallery top (later addition), above a fall front desk; the interior fitted with compartments and drawers. The exterior features drawers (one replaced) with traditional recessed brass campaign bails.
