These urlis or basins are made of solid cast bronze using a traditional cire perdue or lost wax method. It is a complicated, laborious process that can take several days for large pieces. Indian craftsmen are masters at the extraction and shaping of metals and alloys as evidenced in archaelogical finds from the 2nd-3rd millennia.
These bronze urlis are unique to a region in the south of India, in Kerala. Traditionally they were used as cooking vessels which has given them a lovely patina, but they present many alternative uses today, such as sink basins or garden pools.
We have a variety of sizes available.
