Lawrence Cowle Phipps (1862-1958) made his fortune in the steel industry and came to Colorado to retire and also served as a Colorado senator (1919-31). When he arrived in Colorado he rented Captain William Bethel's house, a 26-room mansion built in the style of a Loire Valley chateau. Phipps purchased the mansion in the early 1900s before moving to their newly constructed Belcaro Mansion in 1931.
