This antique landscape painting depicts a small Scandinavian seaside village. This painting has a graphic quality, in pattern and color, similar to that employed in printmaking and resembles a contemporary modern painting, until you look closer and see the village. The painting shows the rich colors of an afternoon sun, with a dramatic palette used frequently at that time period. Signed (lower right): A. Roose. Note: recently cleaned. Unframed.
Roose was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was a prolific artist. He also was skilled at woodcuts and taught printmaking at the Academy and opened his own school in 1909.
