These foo dogs (or lions) were hand carved as architectural elements and once flanked a doorway as guardian figures. They traditionally appear in pairs representing yin and yang, fashioned with the male resting on an embroidered ball and the female with a cub representing the cycle of life. This recumbent pair appear in their appropriate feng shui positions with the male on the right.
