A well executed head and shoulders portrait of Broadway actor Harold W. Gould. Signed (lower left): Albert Sterner/ of and for his friend Harold Gould - 1923. Sterner was a well known portraitist, illustrator, lithographer and painter. He opened a studio in New York in 1885 and did illustrations for many magazines including Harper's, Scribner's Magazine and Collier's. His work was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). A lithograph of this image is also in the collection of the New York Public Library.
