Native American MARIA & JULIAN MARTINEZ Blackware Pottery Olla

Ref: P3111
Maria Montoya Martinez (San Ildefonso, NM, 1887-1980) | Julian Martinez (Pocano) (San Ildefonso, NM, 1879-1943)

Maria was responsible for the revival of the highly burnished black on black pottery of the San Ildefonso Pueblo. This blackware pot is decorated with a feather design around the neck. Signed: Marie + Julian. At first Julian's name was omitted from the signatures since making pottery was considered women's work. From 1925 until Julian's death in 1943 their pots were signed Marie + Julian. This period of their pottery making is high desired by collectors.
