A large, pair of antique, 19th century terracotta griffin garden or architectural statues. Throughout ages, griffins (or gryphons) were known as the vigilant guardians of treasure. With the heads, wings (and frequently forelegs) of an eagle and the hind quarters, or sometimes the front legs of a lion; each, the king of his species, the griffin symbolizes strength. This griffin model can be also be seen at the following historical sites: 1. Cezanne's family manor house, Jas de Bouffan, Aix-en-Provence (1730) (bought by Cezanne family 1859) 2. Chateau de Launaguet, Toulouse, Virebent Brothers (1845).
