A wonderful, antique painting of a bucolic English landscape at dusk. It features an intense sunset framing two figures on horseback, accompanied by a figure walking with a dog, on a country road heading home.
William Manners is known for his landscapes and rural genre paintings. The Furness Countryside in northwestern England provided the subjects for many of his landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists and was elected to the R.B.A. in 1893.
