This vintage sketch by Albert Sterner illustrates an ominous, hooded head with arms outstretched as if running, symbolizing death. Sterner achieved international success as an lithographer, illustrator and painter. His work is represented in numerous institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Brooklyn Museum, the Carnegie Institute (Pittsburgh) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). He is known for his nudes and portraits but his work also includes landscapes, still-life and religious subjects.
