A rare, antique British postal letter box, likely designed to sit on a desk in a grand country house, club or hotel. A staff member would open the locked box and deliver the mail to the local Post Office or hand deliver. The British Post Office started encouraging individuals to install post boxes in the mid 19th century. It has a sloped top marked VR/ Letter Box for the reign of Queen Victoria above a glass pane door with lock. Two rings are mounted on the back and a hook on the side. Note: no key.
