Mathews started his career as a traveling bookseller and artist. During the Civil War he was a war artist but he is best known for his lithographs of Colorado, Montana and Rocky Mountain scenery. In 1866 these views were published as a series of 23 views entitled Pencil Sketches of Colorado. These prints have become some of the rarest and most sought after scenes capturing life in early Colorado. This print is included in the Yale Collection of Western Americana in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
