John Milton (English, 1608-74) was a one of the great poets of the 17th century and was best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost. This sculpture is an unsigned head and shoulders portrait of his likeness wearing a doublet and drapery passing over the left shoulder. The back is flattened so that the figure is meant to look down upon the viewer. The cream colored marble is nicely weathered.
