African Kuba Mukyeem Helmet Mask

This vintage, traditional African ceremonial tribal mask of Mukyeem or Mukenge is made by the Kuba people (Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central Africa). It is made with cloth, raffia, animal hair, beads and cowrie shells with a wooden nose and lips. It is meant to represent an elephant's trunk, which is a royal emblem. Dancers wear these masks at funerals, initiation rites and ceremonies for the king. It is raised on a display stand.
