A Brazilian slave charm necklace or Penca de Balangandan Slave Figa Pendant. This charm collection includes fruit and a hand. The hand charm is a traditional African symbol of good luck. These type of charms were collected and traded by slaves in Colonial Brazil. At home the pencas charms were hung or displayed to drive away evil spirits. The birds on the holder symbolize Brazil and Africa, facing one another. Each charm represents something like the fist (figa) is meant to ward off the evil eye and the grapes represent Oxum, the goddess of fresh water.
