A hand carved buddha from Burma (Myanmar). The body, headdress and base of this buddha are carved and decorated with 24 karat gold leaf then inset with glass discs in red and green to appear as gemstones. The face hands and feet are hand carved alabaster with painted details. The Buddha is seated on a lotus throne in an adamantine position (vajrasana), with his legs crossed and the soles of both feet turned up. Notice the serene, slightly smiling facial expression, closed eyes and elongated ears. His hands are in the gesture of Bhumisparsha mudra (calling the Earth to Witness), a common pose of seated Buddhas in Southeast Asia.
