This antique, Burmese, Mandalay style Buddha was crafted in the 19th century. It is carved from a large block of white marble and painted with gold and paint on the front side. The Buddha is seated on a lotus throne in an adamantine position (vajrasana), with his legs crossed and the soles of both feet turned up. Notice the serene, smiling facial expression, closed eyes and elongated ears. His hands are in the gesture of Bhumisparsha mudra (calling the Earth to Witness), a common pose of seated Buddhas in Southeast Asia.
