The SS Lakeland Victory was one of more than 500 of a class of American cargo ships referred to as Victory ships built to support the war effort during World War II. It was named after the city of Lakeland in Florida although it is unclear why this landlocked city was chosen. See Mrs. Deeds christening the SS Lakeland
