An antique, 19th century French Argand lamp cast in brass with one bracket arm supporting an adjustable metal shade. An Argand lamp is a type of oil lamp invented in 1780, which burned brighter than that of earlier lamp models. It is also know as a Quinquet. Originally designed to burn oil, today it is wired for electricity. Argand lamps were popular in France until about 1850 when it was replaced by more cost effective kerosene lamps.
