This antique box is hand crafted of coin silver with turquoise and coral cabochons. A ghau box (Gau/Gawu) is a small, portable prayer box used in Tibetan Buddhism as a protective amulet and a personal shrine to hold sacred items. Worn as a jewelry pendant or jewelry, it is believed to ward off negative energy. It would contain sacred objects like mantras, images of deities, prayers, to protect the wearer.
