American Black Painted Hitchcock Fancy Side Chair

An antique Hitchcock side chair with traditional stencil decoration on a black ground; the horizontal splat decorated with grapevines. The rush seat is restored with fabric strips on ball and turned legs joined by stretchers. Previously from a private collection in Hadley, Massachusetts. Hitchcock chairs are named after Connecticut cabinetmaker, Lambert Hitchcock (1795-1818). These were one of the very first ever mass-produced pieces of furniture in America, and feature a Sheraton style form with stencil decoration, painted frame and a rush or cane seat.
