French Empire Gilt Bronze and Cut Glass Argand One-Arm Garniture Oil Lamp

An antique, 19th century French Argand lamp cast in bronze with one curved bracket arm supporting a glass shade. The arm on this lamp is slightly curved so it would originally been part of a garniture set, likely for a fireplace mantel. An Argand lamp is a type of oil lamp invented in 1780, which burned brighter than that of earlier lamp models. It is also know as a Quinquet. Originally designed to burn oil, today it could be wired for electricity. Argand lamps were popular in France until about 1850 when it was replaced by more cost effective kerosene lamps.
