Small English Staffordshire Porcelain Flatback Figural Group Spill Vase

DETAILS
An antique, spill vase modelled as a tree stump bocage vase with a couple in 18th century dress flanking a pet deer.

A spill vase would sit on a mantelpiece and was designed to hold rolled paper tapers or thin wood splints and used to transfer fire from a candle to light the fireplace or other candles. Matches at the time were very expensive so they were used sparingly. Flatback examples were undecorated on one side because they were designed to sit on a fireplace mantel and only viewed from the front or sides.
