DETAILS
An antique Westerwald pottery pitcher with a tall, tooled, manganese glaze neck over an ovoid body with a loop handle. Made for the British market, the jug is marked with the cypher GR (for Georgius Rex for George I (1714-27) or George II (1727-60), all framed by cobalt blue swirls and scroll decoration.
Westerwald pottery is a salt glazed, grey stoneware made in the Höhr-Grenzhausen and Ransbach-Baumbach area of Westerwaldkreis in Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany. The decoration is traditionally cobalt blue.
