DETAILS
This figural toby jug is modelled as the seated figure of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) with his signature cigar and his hands folded in his lap. He wears a blue coat, bow tie, grey pants and top hat. Impressed (back of base): Eric Olsen N.R.D. (National Register Designer). Eric Olsen was appointed by Spode as a designer and modeller in 1940.
Originally designed in the potteries of Staffordshire England in the 1760s, Toby Jugs (Fillpots or Philpots) are modelled as seated or standing figures, typically jovial and intoxicated holding a beer, with a homburg hat forming the spout and a handle on the back. These jugs also take the form of popular historical or fictional characters. Figural jugs modelled with only the head and shoulders are referred to as Character or Face Jugs.
