DETAILS
This antique figural toby jug is modelled as a seated man holding an ale tankard and a pipe, wearing a blue and red coat, white cravat, breeches and black tricorn hat.
Originally designed in the potteries of Staffordshire England in the 1760s, Toby Jugs (Fillpots or Philpots) are modelled as seated or standing figures, typically jovial and intoxicated holding a beer, with a tricorn hat forming the spout and a handle on the back. These jugs also take the form of popular historical or fictional characters. Figural jugs modelled with only the head and shoulders are referred to as Character or Face Jugs.
