An antique portrait of General Major Cornelis van Nassau, Heer van Woudenberg (1675-1712), dressed as a knight wearing half length suit of armor and a wig in an oval reserve. Inscribed (lower right): Mintillo Conte de Nassau / Lieut General Geuveneur /...tu̩ la Baittaille / de Denainches.. en Flandre 1712 / ag̩e ...fils du ... D'Auvergne and (lower left) No. 37. Cornelis drowned at the Battle of Denain during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14). His father Henry, Count of Nassau, Lord of Overkirk was a cousin to England's King William III. Note: a very similar portrait by artist Sir Geoffrey Kneller (English, 1646-1723) of Willem Adriaan van Nassau-Odijk (1632-1705) is part of the collection of Slot Zeist (Netherlands).
